Reformation started by Martin Luther brought to end the
domination of Roman Catholic Church in Europe. This domination and unity had
been there for around 10 centuries. The dissents as they were called against
the domination of Church, Protestants brought the new idea of faith, personal
relationship with God via Jesus Christ, strong, inspirational and powerful
stories of Holy Bible which inspired the artists. He was the main reason behind
the end of the domination. His views inspired millions and he changed the lives
of thousands of people.
Raising of the Cross
The painting that, thus, came out was like never made before.
Rembrandt’s painting showed rising of the cross and not the typical crucifixion
of the Jesus Christ. The painting used contrasting colors to create a different
mood and tone of the perception of the god. It was unlike anything made before
regarding Christianity. The painting showed ray of hope which demonstrates
Jesus whose face is passionate, though in pain. Rembrandt’s painting gave a
different interpretation of god in which god was good won over evil. It showed
his personal battle as human being and his struggles. In one of his painting,
Rembrandt has put himself at the foot of the cross and tried to show that his
sins had led Jesus Christ on the cross and Jesus died to forgive him and
several like him for the mankind and to inculcate forgiveness among humans.
This very idea detailed above is the key to Protestants
especially Lutheran theology. The theology says the one should have faith in
Jesus Christ and one should connect directly with the God.
In the background, there is another illustration of Rembrandt in
a turban. In this illustration, Rembrandt is directing Roman soldiers for the
war like their master. In this painting he has made it in a way that it seems
that he is looking out from the painting and asking every sinner to get introspection
done and to have faith in god.
